An Update On Our Padawan

Several people have recently asked me how Padawan is doing at his new school.  In one simple word: fabulous!  Moving him to this school was the best thing that we ever could have done.  He is thriving!

He is doing much better at completing his schoolwork during his school day so that it doesn't become extra homework, because the teachers are giving him extra time, if needed, and are putting some accommodations into place to help him be more independent.  He still struggles with organization and planning, especially with long term projects, but that is due mostly to his executive functioning deficits that are a part of his ASD.  As a matter of fact, the school psychologist is doing some testing in this area so that we will know specific things to do to help him.  He participates in group speech therapy targeting social skills and organization.  He also participates in a weekly social skills group with the full inclusion specialist.  He has made a lot of progress in this area, as he has established some good friendships at school.

He made the choice to be in the school choir.  This weekend they will be singing the national anthem at the Sacramento Kings game.  Later on this month or early in May, they will be singing the national anthem at a Sacramento Rivercats game.  He has had many wonderful opportunities, both learning and extracurricular, at this school and is loving every minute of it.  We are very proud of the progress that he has made, and will continue to make.
